"1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Published in 2005 by Cassell Illustrated. Selected & written by 90 leading international critics, general editor Robert Dimery. In chronological order 1955-2005. Year of release only given here, when considered absolutely necessary. Where there were differences in UK & US (or other) releases for artists, such as the Beatles & the Rolling Stones, the original country of release edition can be taken to be the one listed, unless indicated otherwise. (ie: for the Rolling Stones’ Aftermath & The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night, the UK editions are the ones listed). No compilations were allowed, though, the odd one (The Hives’ Your New Favourite Band, for example) did creep in!

Perception Bits Of Wisdom

Perception Bits Of Wisdom

I found this story today. I thought it was worth sharing. It certainly makes one think a little bit about how we view things, about how the frame sometimes can make the picture.

Perception

Musician Something to think about….

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately. 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

The questions raised:

*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

*Do we stop to appreciate it?

*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made.

How many other things are we missing?

Thanks Gene

A place haunted by Lennon's murder - CNN.com

" (CNN) -- Maybe if you're a New Yorker, you grow accustomed to the sight.

Maybe if you live in the city, it becomes just another part of the Manhattan landscape.

But if you're from somewhere else, visiting, and you're not expecting to encounter it. . . .

Well, you sense that you've been in front of this building before, even though you never have. You feel it before you fully see it.

So it was, early on a recent afternoon, that I was walking east on 72nd Street, approaching Central Park West.

I glanced to my left.

To say the building is spooky is perhaps too easy. Yet everything about it -- the high gables, the balustrades, the gas lanterns burning even in the daytime, the black iron gates leading into the open interior courtyard -- seems purposely designed to give off an aura of portent.

Possibly that impression is merely retrospective -- most likely, when the massive residential building was constructed well over a century ago, the desire was simply to erect a place of urban elegance. And perhaps to the people who live there now, it looks only like home.

When the 1968 movie "Rosemary's Baby" was filmed, and the exterior of this building -- the Dakota -- was chosen as the site of the eerie tale, the die may have been cast. For anyone who ever saw the movie, the temperature drops a few degrees as soon as those walls come into sight.

Yet it is what happened here 29 years ago this week that draws curious visitors still.

I heard a voice behind me.

"Is this where. . .?"

A young woman was asking her friend the question.

"Yes," the friend said, not needing to hear the rest."

Bob Green has a great little piece at CNN reflecting on the 29th anniversary of John Lennon's murder. Like he mentions in the article, I was a bit too young to remember John alive, but he's one of the most influential people in my life.

It just goes to show, we don't always know the impact on others that we will have.

Straight out of Starship Troopers (the book)?

Gryphon Stealth Wingsuits could replace parachutes Coolest Gadgets: "December 4th, 2009 by Mark R in Conceptual Gadgets, Spy Stuff, Vehicle Gadgets

So what are we looking at here, a still shot from the next Transformers movie? No, believe it or not, that is a human, one wrapped up in a wing-like contraption.

This is a little pet project of the Special Parachute and Logistics Consortium called the Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System. The idea is instead of soldiers bail out of planes with parachute things on, they put something on that helps them take full advantage of the sky.

In other words, it isn’t a parachute with a big silk canopy that is slowly falling to the earth like giant slow-moving target. No, this Gryphon Next Generation Parachute System would allow a parachuting soldier to get far away (about 30 miles) and would be invisible to radar."

I don't think I would want to be testing these, but it does look like it might be fun! I'm sure I remember something similar to this in the book Starship Troopers

How to survive an alien attack

So it's snowing. Like crazy. I'm in Houston. I'm sure it's the end of the world. I've been doing research. We're doomed. Maybe by our own hand, maybe naturally occurring global climate shift. maybe the electrical grid will go down, maybe 2012, maybe zombies. My bet is aliens. Here's some helpful advice from the experts.
